Mahimaina is a project that began back in 2015. It was started as an attempt to translate Minecraft into Māori for our tamariki. We spent many months building out a resource pack, based around Te Ao Māori, and gained some attention here in Aotearoa.

A few groups contacted us, including the beautiful peoples at Hei Reo Whānau and Digital Natives Acadamy, which led to a funded collaboration with Hei Reo Whānau to translate Minecraft into Māori. This resource pack was launched in 2016, along with a beautiful island map we created with a commissioned piece from the talented artists at Blockworks.

We are now developing a world based in Te Ao Māori with Microsoft NZ, complete with a fully translated resource pack for Minecraft: Education Edition, which has recently become free for all schools in Aotearoa. We wil also be converting everything over for use on iOS, Android, Windows 10, and concoles versions.

We are aiming for full completion by Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2019 (Start of September 2019). If you are a school that has access to PC’s, iPads, or Macs, and would like to take part in the Beta testing for the world, please contact us using our contact form.
